What I Learned - Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple
This is a gorgeously unpredictable quirky little gem of a book! If it's not on your reading list already add it immediately!
I don't know what it says about me but I found Bernadette completely relatable from the start (without the genius architect part!). I have always found the school gate challenging, to say the least - and sometime life just get's too damned complicated!
What I learned -
...this mission statement is probably what most school's aspire to, and in this time of "Curriculum for Excellence" in the UK, I have heard statements similar to this on a regular basis. I didn't really consider just how ridiculously pompous they sounded until I saw this one written in black and white in this book!
...so true - and I believe every has the capacity to be extraordinary - sometimes they just need someone to believe in them and draw the extraordinary out!
I have told 14 year old daughter a version of this truth for years now! Life can be unbelievably monotonous and boring - but every day has some sparkle and it's up to you to a) be open to it and b) learn to recognise it when it's right in front of you!
...maybe indeed! This one really made me think - especially as I have either flung myself from, or been flung from my fair share of Cliffs in my time, and, touch wood, I always seem to find my self in that magical right place.
Honestly, if you do one thing today, please make it adding this book to your list! And can I take this opportunity to add that Maria Semple's website is a complete and utter joy! Find it here. And don't forget to check out Orion Book's page too!
