An Open Letter to My Daughter on Exam Results Day
Today is results day and before you open that envelope I want to share a wee thing or two with you.
These results are a sheet of paper with letters marked next to a subject that reflect your performance during a few hours of your life sat at a table in an exam hall. They in no way define who you are or how brightly you shine every single minute of every single day.
You are kind, funny, intelligent, beautiful, empathetic, independent and strong with an (at times infuriating) iron will the likes of which I have never seen before (although your Nan may say she's seen it before!). Your light shines blindingly bright. You bring so much love and sunshine and joy to the people you come into contact with on a daily basis in such a quiet and unassuming way. You have overcome so much just to get to where you are standing today, and have no idea the battles you have fought along the way because you just keep putting one foot in front of the other and moving forward. Trust me when I say you are destined for amazing things. You are already living the most incredible life - you won't see your results envelope until much later than most of your peers today because of just how incredible the life you are living right now is.
Don't ever measure yourself against the "success" you perceive in others. You are the only person in this whole wide world who is qualified to be you with all your special and incredible uniqueness. Your gifts are yours alone and no one can ever take them away from you.
I know in my heart of hearts that no matter what life brings, today or any other day, that you, my girl, will change the world - and I know this because you already changed the world, my world - just by being you - and I couldn't be any more proud or blessed or lucky.
Remember who you are right now is enough, and will always be enough. You are more loved and cherished than you will ever know. Always keep shining.
