What I Learned - Awakened by Love by Azin Sametipour
A beautifully executed story about how one American Iranian Muslim experiences and deals with a severe clash of cultures...unputdownable!!!!
What I Learned:
I thought this was just me...Zoha is a wise woman!
I think this is a familiar feeling for most teens, and even a lot of adults...I was talking to one 50 year old the other day who still feels like this. It's sometimes really difficult to "fit in" when you feel that how you live your life is different to what you think your family expect.
Not just in a marriage, in any relationship, be it romantic or friendship. I really hope that I've told this to my daughter enough for her to believe it. If the respect isn't there, then walk away.
This is how life should be is it not? It sounds simple to say but I think a lot of the problems we are experiencing in the world as a whole at the moment could be overcome with this "no logic" approach to other people. People, after all, are all just people, regardless of their beliefs, background and what we think they may accomplish in the future.
I am the first grandchild on one side of my family, and I have to say that I have failed, in epic proportions. at leading the new generation...in fact I would go so far as to say that I have probably shown them all exactly how NOT to do things!
Always fight for what you want. This is never, ever the wrong thing to do. If you believe in your gut that something is for you, is your destiny, then do everything in your power to go after it. Life is too short, and, as long as you're not hurting anyone along the way, you have it in you to go after everything you've ever dreamed of.
WE is always such a beautiful sound. No one likes to feel like they are facing things alone, in fact there is no lonelier feeling in the world.
#lifegoals!!!!!
Again, how great is this. If only this message could be out there, and believed by everyone. People need reminded of this, and the world would be a better place for it. Love & tolerance is all we need, and if we each try to live our lives like this on a day to day basis, who knows how the world could change for the better...and not just in our own wee bubble, but like a ripple effect.
I think we all just need one person in our life that feels like that about us.
another #lifegoal!!!!
Isn't this the only way to live and be truly happy?

Again I think this is a familiar feeling, regardless of culture. I think we all keep a part of the real "us" back from those closest to us in case we disappoint them and don't measure up.

My Goodreads Review:
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Beautifully executed story about the Iranian Muslim / American culture clash and the battle one young American born Muslim woman deals with on a daily basis to find where she truly belongs.
Especially poignant given everything that's going on in the world at the moment.
Zoha, Ethan and the colourful background cast of characters are all written so believable - in their own way Zoha & Ethan are both facing similar battles to do with their history, what their family expect of them, and how this affects their relationship, although in very real and different ways.
I guarantee you you will not see the ending coming, and I will be honest, it left me reeling.
A really thoughtful, eye-opening story...a must read.
