What I Learned - The Incomers by Moira McPartlin
What I Learned:
(Not as many quotes as normal in this one because I was so engrossed in the story I forgot to mark the pages!!!)
Great sentiment! Even the most massive of seemingly overwhelming tasks can be tackled and overcome a little bit at a time! Let's be honest, baby steps are better than no steps at all!
This quote actually gave me goose-bumps. Beautiful. I will be going in search of this book now to read the rest. Really poignant and actually I think this applies to all of us.
This made me smile because my mum says something like this about my dad all the time! (I'm in big trouble if they read this!)
This is so true. Feeling guilty really is awful and can destroy you - and often you feel guilty about something when the other person moved on a long time ago. Don't sit and stew in the guilt. Do something pro-active to make amends. Talk it through, apologise, send a note, flowers, anything rather than sit and stew and waste so much precious time on a feeling that can be dealt with.
My Goodreads review:
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Get your hands on this book, clear everything else from your to be read pile and read it now.
The transition of a woman from a village in West Africa to a mining village in Scotland is never going to be an easy one, but this story is written with such insight, and, well, just HEART that it is impossible to put down, a joy (and heart-wrenching) read, and one that I know will stay with me for a long time to come.
I think, given what's going on in the world at the moment too, that this should be read by every secondary school child in the UK, as it really is thought provoking, and a beautiful, thoughtful insight into how it really feels to be the Incomer.
This book has found a firm place in my heart, and I know it will be one of the few that I re-read every year.
Clear your diary and read this book!
